Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009)

I think it's really sad that Andrew Wyeth died today at the age of 91. You wouldn't know it by looking at the art you see here, but he has always been one of my favorite artists. Of course, much more serious than the work I do. What I most admire about his work is that they aren't just people of people places and things. Every image means something -- it is so full of meaning.

Years ago, I was lucky enough to see an exhibit in Philadephia. Yes, his work is quite powerful - the images haunt you, the subdued colors grab you and the layouts impress you. His father's illustrations are some of my favorite's, too. What a life Andrew must have had growing up!

Paul,

It was a fascinating household. Andrew didn't go to school, but was tutored. He'd spend his days dressing up in his father's pirate or Robin Hood costumes and go tramping through the woods. Starting at age 15, his father gave him a very stenuous old-school art training himself with drawing from life, etc. I have a biography of him -- it's very fascinating if you want to read it.

A few years ago, I visitted the Brandywine River Art Museum, which is mostly the art of N.C. Wyeth, Andrew, and his son Jamie. It is awesome, and you can also tour N.C.'s old house and studio. Not that far away and definitely worth the trip!
